Armungia
from the nuraghe to today's village
Armungia stands on a hill at 366 meters in the sub-region of Gerrei , in the heart of south-eastern Sardinia. Around it there are alternating reliefs, valleys and the course of the Flumendosa , which has shaped its landscape and history. According to popular tradition, the name of the town derives from the Punic leader Aremusa , but the most ancient roots are in the Nuragic civilization , as shown by the nuraghe that still stands today inside the town. The village has passed through the centuries leaving traces of the Roman and Byzantine eras, which testify to a long continuity of settlement. The historian Alberto Boscolo included it among the castra felicia , fortified centers born in the early Middle Ages to guard the borders between the areas subject to Byzantium and the internal zones.
According to another interpretation, the name Armungia derives from Aurea Moenia , or “golden walls”; for others, it is linked to Armonia , the goddess of harmony.
